Chinese scientists have begun growing crop seeds in space. During the 180 days they spent in orbit, the researchers exposed them to radiation and microgravity. The goal of such experiments is to create disease-resistant, high-yielding varieties that will have the best characteristics.
Today, 66,5 thousand seeds are ready for planting, having roamed outer space on the Shenzhou-16 spacecraft for almost six months. In the future, space selection may compete with traditional selection, because it can significantly shorten the breeding cycle of potato varieties.
The Chinese conducted their first experiment on space selection back in 1987. Since then, Chinese scientists have carried out more than 30 similar experiments with seeds of different plants, as well as seedlings and strains. In this way they managed to develop about a thousand new varieties.
