Scientists from the Siberian Research Institute of Plant Growing and Breeding, a branch of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Federal Research Center Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences" (SibNIIRS) have developed a potato variety called "Ataman".
Junior researcher at SibNIIRS Yulia Gureeva notes that Ataman exhibits its best properties in drought conditions. If other varieties germinate no earlier than the 14th day after sowing, then it copes with this task already on the 12th.
The yield of the new variety in a dry year reaches 48 tons per hectare. At the same time, Gala potatoes, one of the most popular in Russia, under similar conditions yield about 30 tons per hectare.
Ataman is also resistant to late blight, which reduces the use of chemical plant protection products and makes such potatoes ideal for organic farming.
Today the variety is being evaluated at the A. G. Lorch Federal Potato Research Center. Its transfer to the state commission for variety testing is planned for 2026.
