This week, Russian farmers got the opportunity to raise the price of onions, EastFruit project analysts report, citing market participants.
Today, Russian farms in the main regions of production offer onions at a price of 10-15 rubles / kg ($ 0,16-0,23 / kg), which is on average 11% more expensive than at the end of last working week.
The reason for the price increase, according to market participants, was a very limited supply of quality onions, as many farms continue to refrain from selling products from storage. According to experts, at the moment onion is going on sale of low quality, which is unsuitable for long-term storage. At the same time, the farmers themselves note that in the current season the percentage of substandard products in the crop has grown markedly. Bad weather and, in particular, heavy rains in September are to blame. As a result, due to increased humidity in some households, problems with bacterial diseases were observed.
It is worth noting that, despite the price increase, onions Russian farmers still sell on average 13% cheaper than in the same period last year. At the same time, market participants report that rising prices for onions in the Russian Federation could be more rapid. However, significant pressure on prices is exerted by stable supplies of inexpensive imported onions, which are systematically imported to the Russian market from Kazakhstan.
