Scientists at the Krasnoyarsk State Agrarian University have obtained new varieties of potatoes and soybeans, adapting the crops to Siberian conditions.
Spring frosts and drought remain the main problems for local farmers, being frequent causes of reduced yields and the death of a significant part of agricultural plants.
Specialists from a scientific institution have developed two varieties of potatoes and two varieties of soybeans that have a low germination rate. Their seeds are able to survive frost and drought underground, producing tops only when stable heat sets in.
As experts note, the use of new varieties will make agricultural production in regions with a sharp continental climate more sustainable and efficient.
