How IKEA specialists chose a vegetable alternative to plastic
As a sign of environmental protection, the furniture company IKEA has announced that in the future, the popular Småland child care service will dispense with plastic in every branch. Therefore, in a ball bath instead of plastic, only environmentally friendly potatoes should be used.
“As a company, we always ask ourselves what we can do to help the planet,” says an IKEA spokesperson, watching children enjoy playing with light brown tubers in the Potato Bath. "We believe that fun and environmental protection should not be mutually exclusive."
Previously, the company conducted several tests for other biodegradable products to replace plastic balls, such as onions (too many crying children), melons (too heavy), pineapple (risk of injury) or kohlrabi (bad smell).
“The potato was perfect,” says a spokesman. “It's not too soft, 100% natural and edible. After the Potato Bath, the products are sent to the kitchen for processing, turning into healthy puree. "
“We are proud to have contributed to the protection of the environment,” said a company spokesman. "What happens to all the old plastic balls, you know, they are burned or disposed of at sea, which, of course, does not affect the environment in the best way."
