Potato harvesting has been completed in the Nizhny Novgorod region. 14,3 thousand hectares were allotted for this crop in the region, which is 7% more than last year. The harvest amounted to 355,1 thousand tons, according to this indicator, the region is in first place in the Volga Federal District (then the Samara region follows with a significant lag: 108,2 thousand tons) and in third in Russia, yielding only to the Bryansk region (681,2 thousand tons) and Tula (455,0 thousand tons) regions.
The potato yield in the Nizhny Novgorod region this year turned out to be lower than last: 248,5 c / ha. This is due to the too hot summer.
Land reclamation can reduce the dependence of potato growing on weather conditions, but so far less than a third of the area occupied by potatoes has been equipped with an artificial irrigation system in the Nizhny Novgorod region. Irrigation systems are used in the farms of the Arzamas, Shatkovsky and Gorodetsky districts, which are the leaders in potato production in the region. New irrigation technologies are effective, but expensive, therefore, in order to stimulate farmers to introduce them in production, in the Nizhny Novgorod region up to 40% of the costs of irrigation are compensated.
