The Potato Variety Management Institute (PVMI) is a nonprofit organization specializing in promoting new potato varieties in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and beyond.
PVMI Executive Director Jeanne Debons notes that the Institute is accumulating the results of a research program for potato breeding in three states (conducted by scientists at Washington State University, Idaho State University, and University of Oregon).
“PVMI exists,” Jeanne Debons emphasizes, “because universities are not in a position to do marketing and promotion. The Institute undertakes these functions. PVMI also collects royalties and royalties. ”
What is the main focus of the breeders participating in the program? Jeanne Debons says that the objectives of each study depend on the needs of the community. The country's Northwest is now aiming to obtain a processed potato variety with a perfect reddish-brown skin. This is the current goal.
