Syria will receive 20 tons of potatoes from Egypt, according to the Syrian Arab news agency SANA.
The decision was made by Prime Minister Hussein Arnous, who approved the recommendation of the "Economic Committee in support of the proposal of the Ministries of Industry, Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Internal Trade and Consumer Protection" to allow the import of Egyptian potatoes until March 15, 2022.
The import of potatoes will make it possible to fill the missing volume of production and provide the local market with a product of acceptable quality at reasonable prices. The reason for the shortage of potatoes was the reduction in sown areas in the central region of Syria, caused by spring frosts and the inability to save a large number of potatoes due to high storage costs.
In the coastal zone of Syria, the sown area of the spring season is 662 hectares, which will allow a harvest of 20 tons of potatoes.
