Harvesting work has begun in almost all regions of the country. This means that the topic of organizing the storage of crops is again becoming especially relevant. We invite you to pay attention to one of the most promising modern technologies.
The technology for storing potatoes and onions in a gas environment, using a natural growth inhibitor ethylene, was developed in England more than 20 years ago.
At present, Restrain's technology is successfully used in more than 40 countries around the world. Its introduction allows agricultural producers to increase the shelf life of table, seed, chip potatoes, as well as onions, maintaining high quality products and guaranteeing their complete environmental safety.
Application
Restrain technology is used for storing table potatoes: thanks to the effect of ethylene, the tubers remain in perfect condition until the next harvest.
The use of this technology when storing seed potatoes is very effective: treatment with ethylene at a certain temperature regime leads to an increase in the number of sprouts on tubers.
Ethylene has been successfully used in the storage of potato chips and french fries: gas is a cheaper and safer alternative to chlorprofam.
Restrain technology also helps to significantly reduce storage losses of onions. The constantly maintained gaseous medium prevents diseases from developing; the bulbs are protected from germination. In addition, the product itself, which has been treated with ethylene, does not contain any toxic compounds and, therefore, is absolutely safe for consumption (which is very important, given that onions are often used in raw form).
Experience in use in Russia
Alexander Firsov, Production Director of the Dmitrovskie Vegetables Group of Companies
- Joint-stock company “Agrofirma“ Bunyatino ”(part of the group of companies“ Dmitrovskie vegetables ”) has been using Restrain technology for storing table potatoes of various varieties for more than five years. In the first years, storage volumes did not exceed 3 tons. Today, using Restrain technology, we store about 000 tons, or 12% of the total volume of ultra-long-term storage products (000 months - until July 60). This potato does not lose its quality and culinary properties, which makes it possible to use it for sale in retail chains and processing (peeled and vacuumized vegetables).
The maximum possible shelf life of potatoes using this technology, subject to all conditions (temperature, humidity), is from 9 to 11 months. Its introduction is especially important for enterprises that are engaged in potato processing, since young potatoes do not have a high dry matter content and are "watery".
The use of the Restrain technology on seed potatoes is no less promising. Tubers stored in an ethylene medium give uniform friendly shoots in the fields, and an increase in the number of stems per hectare allows saving planting material up to 15-20% (depending on the variety).
In general, over the years of use, only positive aspects of Restrain can be noted:
- the product does not change its taste;
- the ability to store special varieties at temperatures of 6-8 0WITH;
- stable storage without germination of tubers in "warm" winter and late spring;
- reduction of losses during storage;
- ease of maintenance (stable operation);
- reliability.
Alexey Zhuravlev, General Director of LLC "Agrocenter" Korenevo "
- We have been using Restrain equipment for two years. In an ethylene atmosphere we store seed potatoes of high reproductions: the first field generation and super-super-elite.
Restrain technology helps us to solve two problems at once.
First, with its help, potatoes do not germinate before the time we need. This is important for us.
The fact is that the potatoes in LLC "Agrocenter" Korenevo "are grown in the fields located in the Meshchera lowland, and these lands are distinguished by the close occurrence of groundwater. We start landing no earlier than May 10-15. But in the Moscow region already in April, as a rule, the weather is warm, and we were unable to maintain such a temperature in the storage (not equipped with a refrigeration unit) that the potatoes would not germinate. After the Restrain equipment was installed in the vault, we solved this problem.
Second: after we turn off the installation (two weeks before planting), almost all "dormant" sprouts wake up in the potato tubers. This is not always the case with traditional storage. Moreover, there are varieties with apical dominance, such tubers usually have only one or two sprouts, and there is always a risk of breaking them off when planting. Now the loss of a small part of the shoots will not affect the result in any way.
I also note that an increase in the number of sprouts leads to an increase in the number of stolons: tubers stored using ethylene technology form five to six (and sometimes up to eight) stolons. As a result, the yield increases, which is very pleasing not only to us, but also to all the buyers of LLC Agrocenter Korenevo: we sell seed potatoes to large enterprises, farms, and amateur gardeners.
Considering all this, this year we are planning to purchase another Restrain unit and put it in the second potato storage facility.
The official supplier of Restrain equipment and technology in Russia is PEYA AGRO LLC.
