One of the determining factors for obtaining rich and stable potato yields is the creation of new varieties, the yield potential of which is combined with high resistance to a complex of biotic, abiotic and anthropogenic environmental factors. Successful breeding ensures real progress in the development of the potato industry by increasing productivity, improving product quality and reducing production costs.
In the current market conditions, agricultural enterprises and peasant (farm) farms are most acutely in need of highly productive table varieties with improved quality characteristics of tubers and varieties for processing into finished potato products and semi-finished products, and the owners of personal subsidiary farms and garden plots, in the first place, early maturing, late blight and nematode-resistant potato varieties.
Despite the fact that more than 200 varieties of potatoes are presented in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia, no more than 20% of the area is actually used in the production of high-quality seed material of domestic varieties. This is due to the fact that most of the varietal composition has ceased to meet the new market requirements, especially in relation to the commercial quality of potato tubers entering large retail chains.
To ensure a stable volume of production and consumption of potatoes in the context of import substitution, by Decree No. 996 of the Government of the Russian Federation of August 25, 2017 "On approval of the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Agriculture for 2017-2025." the subprogram "Development of potato breeding and seed production in the Russian Federation" was accepted for implementation. One of the main tasks of this subprogram is to increase the volume of high-quality seed potatoes of modern competitive domestic varieties on the basis of new high-tech developments within the framework of the implementation of comprehensive research programs (CRPD) by specialized institutions of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and integrated scientific and technical projects (KNTP) on the basis of agricultural enterprises of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation.

In this regard, the results of extensive comparative agroecological tests of potato varieties of domestic and foreign selection, included in the State Register of the Russian Federation in recent years, are of particular relevance. The results of these tests are of interest to both the KSTP and KPNI participants, since only joint efforts to develop import substitution in the production of high-quality seed potatoes of new domestic varieties, competitive in comparison with the most demanded foreign analogs, is it possible to really satisfy the requests of commodity producers, retail chains and specific consumers.
It should be emphasized that the successful carrying out of comparative agroecological tests of new varieties of potatoes turned out to be real due to the long-term close cooperation of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution “Federal Research Center of Potatoes named after AG Lorkha "and SSSK" Ustyuzhensky potato ", in the fields of which the assessment of varieties of Russian and foreign selection has been carried out for more than five years. At the same time, the parties proceeded from a mutual understanding of the urgent problem of the absence on the Russian seed potato market of a certain structure interested in marketing new domestic varieties. Breeding establishments are forced to make efforts to promote new varieties (often to no avail), and agricultural enterprises without comparative tests and large-scale reproduction are not ready to engage in charity.
In a joint partnership of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "FRITS of potatoes named after A.G. Lorkha ”acts as the originator of new varieties, and SSSK“ Ustyuzhensky Potato ”- as an interested producer of seed potatoes, which is one of the first to determine the potential of new promising varieties and study the features of their cultivation technology, which makes it possible to count on profits from large-scale multiplication of seed. Thanks to a wide client base, SSSK "Ustyuzhensky Potato" in 2019-2020 successfully supplied a number of agricultural enterprises with new varieties of the FITs potato selection named after A.G. Lorkha, included in the State Register of the Russian Federation in recent years, and, most importantly, only entering the market.
To set up test sites, 100 tubers (60-80 mm) of the elite class of each tested variety were used. The cultivation technology is generally accepted in a particular agricultural enterprise.
Analysis of the results of agroecological testing of new varieties of selection of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution "Federal Research Center of Potatoes named after A.G. Lorkha "in agricultural organizations and peasant (farmer) farms of nine regions of the Russian Federation shows that in different soil and climatic conditions of cultivation, most varieties demonstrate a consistently increased yield - at the level of the best foreign analogous varieties, and sometimes 10-18% higher (table 2). In addition, new Russian varieties are distinguished by a lesser degree of damage to the tops and tubers by the most common diseases: late blight, common scab, rhizoctonia and anthracnose.
The potato varieties that have passed the tests differ significantly in terms of yield, which in this case is associated with the ripening time. However, this trait is controllable to a certain extent, and it can be “improved” with the help of appropriate agronomic techniques (preparation of seed material, planting dates, fertilization, care). Other important economically useful traits, which include resistance to diseases and pests, as well as adaptability to environmental factors, are more dependent on the genotypic characteristics of varieties. Low resistance requires the use of chemical protection products that adversely affect the environment. Therefore, for effective potato growing, varieties with high resistance to the most common phytopathogens, which cause significant damage to the crop and its quality, are of particular importance. Also, varieties with high adaptability to unfavorable environmental factors (weather and soil conditions), resistant to heat, drought or waterlogging are becoming more and more popular. The degree of resistance to stress, as well as to disease, is controlled by certain gene systems, and the level of these traits is clearly manifested in the appropriate growing conditions.
Thus, for successful import substitution, it is necessary to increase the competitiveness of newly created potato varieties of domestic selection, the productive potential of which is realized at the level of 50-60 t / ha, with the obligatory observance of cultivation technology, taking into account varietal characteristics. Therefore, with all the evidence of the achieved success in breeding, it is necessary to overcome the shortage of highly productive varieties that are resistant to extreme weather conditions, the most harmful pathogens, responsive to irrigation and fertilization, suitable for mechanized cultivation, long-term storage and having high consumer qualities.
In the short term, the innovative development of potato growing is largely determined by an increase in the efficiency of using the best domestic breeding achievements while creating conditions for a faster increase in production volumes and an improvement in the quality of seed material in the process of accelerated promotion of new promising varieties of commercial potatoes to the market.
