Dutch portal Nieuwe Oogst reports that the potato crop in Canada in 2021 is estimated at 5,58 million tons, up 18,2% from last year.
The increase in production is due to the expansion of the area by almost 11 hectares. The average yield per hectare has increased from 000 to 33 tons. In the east of the country, growing conditions for potatoes were relatively favorable; in the west, it was mostly hot and dry.
Prince Edward Islands is the province in which this crop is most effectively grown. Here, potato growers harvested 1,29 million tons from an area of slightly less than 35 thousand hectares. This is almost 36% more than in the harvest 2020. In the ranking of the provinces with the highest potato production, Alberta and Manitoba rank second and third, respectively, with production of 1,12 and 1,1 million tons.
