Dagestan is a key producer of cabbage in our country. Inside the republic, the cultivation of cabbage is mainly concentrated in the Levashinsky district, where about 350 thousand tons are grown annually. The average yield per hectare of a cabbage field in Dagestan is 550 centners, while the national average is 352 centners per hectare.
In January 2022, the yield of this crop was about 600 centners per hectare, according to the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic.
In the south of the republic, you can grow cabbage almost all year round. These days in the village of Dzhalgan, Derbent region, white cabbage is being harvested. Sharip Sharipov, First Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Dagestan, got acquainted with the harvesting progress. He was accompanied by Yusif Gereykhanov, Head of the Department of Agriculture of the Derbent District, Kishtili Kurkiev, Director of the Dagestan Experimental Station - a branch of the VIR, and Magomed Boratov, Professor of the Federal Research Center of the Republic of Dermatology.
As Sharip Sharipov noted, the peculiarity of growing cabbage in cold weather is that the resulting products are environmentally friendly, since there is no need for chemical treatments of plants against diseases and pests. Such products are highly valued in the consumer market; they go directly from the field to the shelves of shops in the regions of the country.
Further, he noted that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Dagestan is taking measures to increase the supply of Dagestan cabbage to the cities of our country. Since 2022, a new federal project has been launched to support open-field vegetable growing, work will be carried out to increase the volume of cabbage produced.
“If earlier cabbage producers focused on varieties and hybrids of foreign selection, today almost half of the plantings are occupied by varieties of domestic selection, bred by scientists from the Timiryazev Academy and the Poisk seed company. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food of the Republic of Dagestan has been working closely with these two scientific structures over the past two years. At the direction of the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia, we have created demonstration sites for various crops in Derbent, Levashinsky and a number of other regions with scientific support from the Dagestan Experimental Station. We invite vegetable growers to these sites and show the advantages of hybrids of domestic selection in real field conditions. Farmers are listening, especially since domestic seeds are 2 times cheaper than foreign analogues, the quality of products in a number of positions is also higher. We intend to continue this educational work,” Sharipov said.
