Increased demand from wholesale companies allows Russian farmers to further increase selling prices for onions, EastFruit project analysts said. Significant support for price growth in the onion segment is also provided by the almost complete absence of imported products on the Russian market.
According to the daily monitoring of the project, only from the beginning of this week onions in Russian households became more expensive by an average of 13%. Today, local producers are ready to ship onions no cheaper than 32-45 rubles / kg ($ 0,44-0,61 / kg), depending on the quality and region of production.
It is worth noting that, despite high demand, farmers have not been able to raise prices for onions more significantly. The reason for this is an increase in supply on the market: companies that previously preferred to refrain from selling this week began to open refrigerators en masse.
We add that after another price increase today, onions in the Russian Federation are on average 1,8 times more expensive than in mid-April 2019. At the same time, Russian farmers have little doubt about the further increase in onion prices. Manufacturers explain their assumptions by the seasonal depletion of onion stocks in households and the stably high demand in this segment.
