After the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of people suffering from chronic hunger can double. The Norwegian company Yara (one of the largest suppliers of mineral fertilizers), with the support of the United Nations and the Norwegian government, is taking action and allocating $ 25 million to provide food for more than one million people in South and East Africa.
Yara Launches Africa: A Prosperous Farm, A Prosperous Future, an initiative that seeks to mobilize support from 250 small farmers in seven African countries to ensure food production and improve food security. The initiative includes advocacy, the introduction of digital solutions, and the supply of 000 tons of high quality zinc fertilizers to enhance soil fertility.
Yara's contribution, combined with agronomic support for one year, is expected to feed more than one million people in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique.
“Vulnerable communities may face the most devastating food crisis in decades. If we do not act now, millions of people will find themselves in deep poverty and hunger. This is especially alarming in Africa, where life and livelihoods are at stake. As an important part of the food value chain, we are responsible for supporting vulnerable farming communities and helping to prevent a hunger crisis, ”said Svein Tore Holzeter, President and CEO of Yara International.
